make now completes, but : ./hydrogen gives a "stack smashing detected" error (during the splash screen)
So : First fix ALSA (see other note) :

.. a quick search of the atrpms mailing list gave a solution.
cd /etc/alsa/pcm
mv dsnoop.conf.rpmnew dsnoop.conf
mv dmix.conf.rpmnew dmix.conf
Now, atsd doesn't error immediately. Not sure about the system tests, though
Back to hydrogen install
The do a make install as root - the user-land version has trouble dealing with the ALSA server, apparently.
